Forgiveness

Read: Matthew 6:12 and Romans 12: 17-19

What is forgiveness?

Forgiveness is letting go of anger, bitterness and the need for vengeance against our offenders and replacing those feelings with grace and mercy toward them.

In the Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6:12) Jesus says, ”forgive us our debts as we also have forgiven our debtors.”  Our greatest example of forgiveness was shown by Jesus when he gave his life for our sins and said from the cross, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.”  In Romans 12:17-19, Jesus teaches us, “Repay no one evil for evil.  Have regard for good things in the sight of all men.  If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men.  Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather leave room for God’s wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine.  I will repay.” Vengeance isn’t even ours.  It is God’s.

Do I have to reconcile with him/her?  No. Forgiveness does not depend on the offender offering an apology or upon you continuing the relationship or upon you allowing hurtful behavior to continue.

Why should I forgive someone who has wronged me?  Most importantly, because we are called upon by scripture to do so.  There are also personal benefits such as, releasing unhealthy anger and bitterness, reducing stress, improving our health, repairing possible valuable relationships, and doing good in and of itself.  Your forgiveness can also set an example for the next generation and for improvement in society. 

When you have accepted Jesus into your heart, you are given the ability to love and forgive like never before.  Because forgiveness is difficult, we need to prepare our hearts with God’s Word, with prayer, and with understanding of just how much we have been forgiven.

Heavenly Father,

Help us to forgive those who have hurt us and to understand what may have led to their hurtful actions. You died that we might be forgiven and You even forgave your oppressors.  We are eternally thankful for your sacrifice on our behalf.  We pray that you will bless our offenders and that your spirit of forgiveness will come into our hearts, so we will be able to give up our feelings of anger, resentment and vengeance.
