I Wonder What Dad Is Doing?

Read Psalm 63 and Psalm 8
I grew up in the country. We lived on 400 acres of woods. Since, most teenagers are not the
first ones out of bed in the morning, my dad was outside working on something by the time my
eyes opened for the day. Every Saturday, I remember that my very first thoughts upon waking
where “I wonder what dad is doing?” I would often roll quickly out of bed… go get a quick
bowl of cereal and be heading out the door to go find dad.
I loved being with my dad.
I would stand on the side of the tractor and go wherever he went. I would help him work on
whatever project he was chasing that day. I trusted him fully and would do anything he asked
me to do (and boy do I have a few crazy stories). I was his helper and just enjoyed being with
him… doing whatever he was doing.
I love being with my dad.
Very recently, I was visiting my dad and found myself feeling like a teenager for a day. We
worked on several projects together. I rode on the side of the tractor, like I did hundreds of
times when young. It was a very special nostalgic day.
Then I came across Psalm 63:1 which says, “O God, You are my God; Early will I seek You; My
soul thirsts for You….”. Wow… this verse really hit me. I suddenly realized the Psalmist took
that same desire I had to be with my dad… and applied it to his heavenly Dad (God). His first
thoughts were of God. He desired to be with Him. It’s almost like he woke up first thing in the
morning and said, “I wonder what Dad is doing?” … and couldn’t wait to get out there and be
with him.
Let’s try something. For 30 days, let’s try to remember to wake up and ask ourselves, “I
wonder what Dad is doing?” … and spend some time with God. We might just find ourselves
saying:
I love being with my Dad.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, I am thankful for your promise in Psalm 8:17 that says, “I love those who love
me, and those who seek diligently will find me.” Thank you for being available to us in a
personal way. Please increase my desire to spend time with You. Stir your Spirit within me.
Show me what You are doing, so I can be part of it. I love you. Amen.
