Thankfulness in All Seasons

Summer often feels like the easiest time to be thankful – we have sunny and warm days, our schedules are a little more relaxed, hopefully there is time for a vacation, and things feel lighter than the rest of the year. But Paul’s words in 1 Thessalonians remind us that thankfulness isn’t meant to be seasonal. It’s meant to be a rhythm of the heart, no matter what’s happening around us.

When Paul wrote these words, he wasn’t sitting on a beach with a cold drink. He was guiding a young church facing pressure, uncertainty, and challenges. Yet his instruction was simple and bold: rejoice, pray, and give thanks in all circumstances. Not for all circumstances, but in them. There’s a big difference. God isn’t asking us to pretend hard things are good. He’s inviting us to look for His goodness in the middle of them.

Thankfulness shifts our perspective. It helps us see what God is doing instead of only what feels difficult. It slows us down long enough to notice blessings we might otherwise rush past. And it reminds us that God is present in every season - sunny ones, stormy ones, and everything in between.

Think about the moments this summer when gratitude comes easily—and the moments when it doesn’t. What would it look like to practice thankfulness not just when life feels good, but also when plans change, storms roll in, or days feel ordinary?

Choose one part of your day—breakfast, bedtime, car rides, or mealtimes—and make it a “thankfulness moment.” Each person shares one thing they’re grateful for. Big or small, silly or serious. Let this simple practice train your heart to look for God’s goodness everywhere.

Father, thank You for being good in every season. Teach us to notice Your blessings, even on the days that feel busy, messy, or hard. Help our family grow in gratitude and see Your hand at work all around us. Fill our hearts with joy as we learn to give thanks in all circumstances. Amen.
