What are We Thankful For?

Pastor John Rigg

Read Psalm 100

If I were to ask you,

“Are you a Thankful person?”

You probably would respond by saying, yes.

Most of us are.

But if I dug a little deeper and asked you; “What are you Thankful for?”

What would be on your list?

Like many of us, you might say,

I am Thankful for my Health, Family, Spouse, Job etc.

Psalm 100 is titled a Psalm of Thanksgiving.

I find it interesting that none of the items that most of us are thankful for are in the Psalmist’s list. In this short yet pertinent psalm, the first item on the psalmist’s list is God Himself!

Have you ever just Thanked God for Himself?

When we are Thankful to God for God, we immediately are engaged in worship to Him.

Although the items on our list all come from God, Psalm 100 challenges us to evaluate our

worship. Are we subconsciously worshiping the items on our list? Is that why we are so thankful

for them? Or is the center of our worship and thankfulness, God Himself?

It is He who has made us the psalmist states, and not we ourselves!

He didn’t need us to make us or any other item of creation.

Are we thankful that God is Creator and that we are His creation?

He is good to His creation and cares for His creation, like a shepherd cares for the flock.

Are we thankful that the God of all Creation cares for us so intimately?

If you are like me, our thankful list can sometimes take priority over the God who made every

item on our list possible.

Good thing for you and I, God is merciful, and His mercy is everlasting!

If our thankful list is only compiled of created things, then maybe we can prioritize our list by

placing our Creator at the top where He belongs.

A Prayer from Psalm 100

Lord, we have so much to be grateful for

today and every day.

We are thankful that You are our Lord

and that You are our God!

Thank you for creating us

and for caring for us as Your sheep.

Today and every day,

we enter Your gates with thanksgiving

and with praise!

Today and every day,

we express our gratitude to You

and bless Your Name!

Because You are good!

Because Your mercy endures forever!

And because Your truth stands firm throughout all generations!

Lord, we are thankful today and every day! Amen
