Whispers - Was that you, God?

Keith Hancock - Worship Leader

Read: Isaiah 30:21

When I was in my early twenties, I was working on some kind of small project in the basement.  I don’t remember the exact details… but I remember having a plastic hose in my hand… and trying to dig a hole in the side with a pocketknife.  I had the smallest thought run through my head that “this could be bad if the knife folded” and literally milliseconds later the knife folded and confirmed the split-second thought. I still have the resulting scar to this day.

Over the next couple of years, similar events happened, where I would have the quick passing thought… and then BAM… very quickly something bad happened.  Even things like just a passing thought that I haven’t checked the oil in my car in a long time… and then hours later it wouldn’t start… in the Home Depot parking lot (due to low oil from a leak I didn’t realize was happening).

Then it hit me… was that you, God?  Were those tiniest “whispers” actually the Holy Spirit warning me?

You may remember the story in 1 Kings 19, where Moses went up the mountain to receive the ten commandments directly from God.  God wasn’t in the powerful wind… or earthquake… or fire… but a still small voice.

This world we live in is VERY noisy.  We have more “voices” than ever bombarding us: the world… our flesh… the enemy… we have social media… hundreds of tv channels… streaming services… thousands of podcasts… radio stations.  All this noise makes it hard to hear those whispers and the still small voice.  Job 33:14 says, “For God may speak in one way or another, Yet man does not perceive it.”

Jesus promised in John 14:26 that, “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.”  See… our loving Father has sent us a helper!

I just love what Isaiah 30:21 says, “Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it, Whenever you turn to the right hand Or whenever you turn to the left.”

After I wondered if that was really the Holy Spirit whispering to me… I tried to be more alert to those small whispers.  Any thought of “this could go wrong” caused me to immediately stop what I was doing… take a step back… and re-evaluate the situation.  A whisper to call a friend… or write a note… or find something missing… or… or… or… (there are endless possibilities of how that still small voice wants to be our Helper.  I’m still growing in listening… hearing… and taking action.

I challenge you to be more intentional to create times to be quiet… to listen… to tune in more… to be aware of His presence.  It really can be life changing.

Heavenly Father, thank you for loving us enough to send a Helper to those who believe in You.  Please help us hear your voice through the noise of this life.
